Speech and language therapist help patients with varying levels of speech, language and communication problems. They also support with difficulties in swallowing, drinking or eating. In adults communication or eating and swallowing problems may occur as a result of neurological impairments and degenerative conditions including stroke, head injury and Parkinson’s disease.
Speech and language therapists undertake assessments to determine the nature of any speech and communication difficulty and devise and deliver a personalised treatment programme which is reviewed and amended as required.
Speech and language therapists work within a multidisciplinary team and also advise family and / or carers on implementing a treatment programme.
