Speech & Language Therapy
Our Speech and Language Therapists specialise in assisting individuals who face speech, communication, and swallowing difficulties due to neurological conditions such as strokes, head injuries, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. We are also able to accept clients who have a learning disability and/or Autism. We are able to support clients with:
- Aphasia: A multi-modal language disorder that can occur after a neurological event
- Cognitive Communication Disorders: Difficulty with conversations, communication and interactions due to cognitive deficits, e.g. memory, attention.
- Verbal Dyspraxia: Acquired speech disorder
- Social Communication Disorders: 1:1 therapy and coaching to support specific goals around social communication.
- Dysarthria: Impaired speech production due to muscle weakness.
- Dysphagia: Difficulties with eating, drinking, and swallowing safely.
- AAC users: Alternative and Augmentative Communication users, e.g. grids, iPads, eye gaze technology
We provide a comprehensive suite of services, including detailed assessments and ongoing therapy programmes. Our therapies are delivered on an outreach basis, employing evidence-based methods to enhance communication and swallowing functions.
Our patient-centred approach focuses on developing effective communication strategies and improving abilities related to eating and drinking.
Collaborating closely with families, carers, and other multidisciplinary team members, we ensure consistency in treatment and strive for significant, personalised outcomes for each individual.
Additionally, we offer specialised training for care homes and other institutions dealing with communication and swallowing difficulties.
Key Questions for Identifying Needs:
- Do you or someone you know have difficulty with saying the right words or sounds to a stroke, brain injury, or another medical condition?
- Are weak facial muscles causing speech to be slurred?
- Are there issues with speaking or understanding language?
- Is there a diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Acquired Brain Injury, Stroke or Head & Neck Cancer affecting communication or swallowing?
Comprehensive Speech and Language Assessments
Our assessments are tailored for adults experiencing difficulties with expressive communication, understanding, reading, writing, and eating or drinking. Following an assessment, our therapists provide tailored advice and determine whether further intervention or appropriate referrals is needed.
Specific Areas of Therapy Include:
- Stroke Recovery: Initial assessments identify communication strengths and challenges, directing therapy to improve skills and develop effective communication systems.
- Acquired Brain Injury: We offer a range of therapies from Intensive Interaction to advanced comprehension and social communication skills development.
- Voice Care: Therapy focuses on vocal hygiene and techniques to improve voice quality, especially following diagnoses such as vocal nodules.
- Parkinson’s Disease: Tailored therapies address speech production and intelligibility, with additional support through communication aids if needed.
- Dementia Care: Ongoing therapy aims to maximise functional communication, enhancing quality of life and interaction with loved ones.
At Smart Rehabilitation, we are committed to enhancing our client's abilities and enriching their lives through dedicated and expert Speech and Language Therapy.
